DINELIGHT

Healthy Eating Remotely Together Through the Internet of Things

Project 'Interactive Technology Design' | Client: Fresh Idea Factory | Feb. 2013 - Jul. 2013

The task of the project was to design a playful way to stimulate each other (the elderly and the child) to eat healthily using a connection through internet-of-things-enabled objects. Working with a team with 3 Dutch and 1 American students. I was in charge of concept design and visual design, and assisted the programming and prototyping.

Concept

We designed the "Dinelight", an interactive table, which uses color lights to facilitate healthy eating in a friendly and elegant way. A pair of table sets are supposed to be bought together, kept by two houses. The lights light up when the table is set. Each bowl holds a certain kind of food, and the position should be fixed. The pace of the LED matrix indicates the suggested eating pace; the light intensity of the light rings around the bowls indicates the amount of food left in the bowl, so people can compare how much they eat in a rough way; if one wants the other to eat more, he/she taps the bowl, and the other side would receive a signal.

In the exhibition, our clients were excited about our concept and would like to develop it further with the idea directions we offered in cooporation with an hospital in Ede and the University of Wageningen.
