OLYMPUS MANUAL

Redesign for Olympus D700

Project Usability & User Experience Assesement in Design| Client: Olympus | Feb. 2013 - Jun. 2013

The project was aimed to assess the current usability of Olympus D700 compact camera, and redesign the camera with new defined user experience. Working as a team with 3 Dutch and 1 Danish design students. In the group, I was in charge of working on user research, concept developing and visualization, UI design and prototyping.

Through desk research, online suyvey and a user study, several usability and user experience problems were defined, based on which we proposed usability and UX targets.

Conceptualization

After some design interations, the final concept, Olympus Manual, was formed. It facilitates users to learn professional photography functions and terminology through a fun, carefree and efficient way. The concept mainly deals with the interface of the camera, keeping the physical form design out of the scope of the project.

The  usability  of  the  redesign was tested in study 2 with an interactive prototype. According  to  the feedbacks,  the final  redesign  was proposed.

Final redesign

The final  redesign  was proposed  and  evaluated. It was prooved that Olympus Manual provides more possibilities with fewer variables, and is likely to become people's "first camera" before using DSLRs.
